The Story of Abraham

This week's text is Genesis 12- 25: the story of Abraham. Who has begun to read so far? What questions does the text bring up in your mind?

  1. Let me start by throwing a question out there. There's a weird passage in Genesis 15 where Abraham is commanded to get several animals and cut them in half. Then, we see that a "blazing torch" and "smoking oven" pass between the pieces. What is that all about? I think I know the answer and would like to see if we're on the same page.

  2. I don't really know, but does it have to do something with God making a covenant?
There are so many things that I am baffled about. How about in Genesis 20:6 when God tells Abimelech that he knows that he took Sarah to be his wife he did it out of 'integrity of heart' I know that he didn't know she was Abraham's wife,, How could God say it was done out of 'integrity', when he already had another wife? Isn't it sinful anyway?

I find that section really weird too, I really don't know what to make of it! Share Jeff, Share!

Also, in chapter 16, the situation with Hagar, the angel of the Lord comes to her and says he will increase her descendants, and that she is now with child because the Lord has heard her misery, and Ishmael will be against everyone and everyone against him, and he will live in hostility with everyone. I know that was a huge run-on, but it feels like the angel is not giving Hagar much benefit, if her son is going to turn out like that.

I guess I struggle with the part that foretells the problems the hebrews go through in exodus too. The Lord is telling Abram he will bless him with descendants, but that they will go through so much hardship? It doesn't seem like much of a blessing to me.
